Tertiary FL education is regarded as an integral component of university studies as it provides linguistic and communicative competencies indispensable for students' academic and professional development. The importance of teaching foreign languages not for general, but for specific, discipline-oriented purposes has already been acknowledged as a necessity worldwide. However, a survey of the pertinent literature indicates that most of the theoretical and empirical research conducted within this context has focused, understandably, on English, as the lingua franca of international communication, whereas other languages have been considered to a much lesser extent. This paper aims to provide an overview of current situation in teaching Italian for social sciences and humanities to non-language students at Serbian universities as regards different aspects of this undergraduate university course learners' needs and motivation, level of language and subject matter proficiency, teaching and learning methodology, learning outcomes, material design, evaluation and other curriculum development issues. The theoretical perspective taken in this study includes a view of tertiary language instruction as learner-centered, contextualized, collaborative, personalized as well as an increasingly autonomous process.
